“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4, ESV).
I’ll be honest — the first time I really heard that verse after losing Samantha, it made me a little mad. Blessed? Me? I didn’t feel blessed. I felt broken.
But the longer I sit with it, the more I see what Jesus was really saying. He wasn’t calling mourning fun. He was calling it seen. In a world that rushes you past your grief — “you should be over it by now,” “at least she’s in a better place” — Jesus stops, looks right at the weeping ones, and says: you are blessed. Not in spite of your mourning. Right in the middle of it.
And then the promise: they shall be comforted. Not maybe. Not if they grieve correctly. Shall.
In this episode, I walk through what this beatitude has meant to me as a grieving mom — and why it might be the most tender promise Jesus ever made to moms like us.
